The fight against morning sickness has begun, and I am trying to do all I can to keep it at bay. The first thing I do is stay hydrated. Dehydration is believed to bring on morning sickness and the queasies, so I have a water bottle with me at all times. Not only that, but if vomiting were to strike at least I know that I have been doing my part to stay hydrated at the very least.
I snack between meals. I know that I am only supposed to consume about 300 extra calories per day, but if I snack between meals it makes my stomach feel a lot better. Good snacks for this are crackers, toast with peanut butter, or fruit. I like cheese too, but I think that is my cravings talking.
I drink teas that have a calming effect like mint and chamomile. They seem to ease my stomach and also add to my water intake.

I hope the morning sickness eases soon! It sounds like you’re doing a great job
If you like tea, try a ginger tea – I know Lipton makes one. Ginger has tummy-settling effects, too.
Ditto on the ginger tea. I just use dried ginger and boiling water. I’m happy to send you some (my mom got me a half a pound of it) if you can’t find it. HOWEVER, if you are actually puking a lot, I recommend avoiding the ginger tea. It’s not so good the second time around. If you’re on the edge, though, it can help a lot.
The cheese is probably a good choice for the snack. Some people find that some fat and protein help.
I also found a lot of help from vinegar-based foods. I started eating a lot of 3-bean salad. It’s good protein, plus veggies, etc. It’s easy to make even when feeling ill, and it keeps in the fridge for a few weeks. I can send the recipe if you want.
If you worry you are eating too much, you might find that you are eating less at meals. Please don’t stress about eating, though. Your body is sending you clear signals, you are responding appropriately. The 300 calories, certain number of pounds is a “one size fits all” approach to pregnacy.
Geo ~ Thanks for the detailed comment. I knew you mamas would come through for me, and I have a feeling this is only the beginning.
I don’t think I’ve ever had ginger tea. I will have to look for dried ginger, and I’ll keep in mind to only use it for an icky tummy not for the pukes. Thanks for the warning!
I would appreciate the recipe for the 3-bean salad. I’ve never had it before, but I think protein is definitely something I need more of these days.
It’s true I have been eating less at meals, but snacking in between which sounds like exactly what I should be doing. I understand 300 is just a marker, but it’s a good thing to know so I don’t go into “I can eat anything mode because I’m pregnant.” I’m really trying to listen to my body and what it’s calling for because I think it’s been on track so far.
Ditto on the ginger tea. What worked for me was nibbling Ginger Snaps throughout the day.
Also, (this was recommended by my doctor as well as staying hydrated) is an extra dose of Vitamin B6. You can get them at the health food store. I didn’t eat for the first 8 weeks or so of pregnancy and ended up in the ER for dehydration, because I couldn’t even hold water.
After taking the B6 for 2 days, I was a changed woman!
Enjoy your pregnancy!
Cheese is a great snack!
Glad to hear things are going well.

I’m writing this down from memory, because I don’t have it on my computer and I’m still a thousand miles from home. The original recipe is from a 1960s edition of the McCall’s cookbook. I’ve made changes, including less sugar and olive oil in place of salad oil.
In a salad bowl, mix
1/2 c olive oil
1/4 c red wine vinegar (or whatever you have. Basalmic is too strong)
1/3 c sugar
ground pepper
Add
1 c fresh or frozen green beans, in 1″ pieces
2 cans of beans, garbonzo, pinto, red kidney, etc.* Drained and well rinsed.
1/4 c green onions
1-4 whole cloves of garlic slit down the length of the clove.
Stir. Store in the fridge covered.
____
I also like to add
1 c corn
strips of bell pepper (fresh or frozen)
*I like black beans, but they tend to turn the salad an odd shade of gray.
I found that eating every 2 hours helped me, no matter what I ate. As long as I had something in my stomach, it somehow chased the queasies away.
My friend found some ginger candy at Target, and it worked wonders, too. Great for when tea just isn’t a good option.
And don’t worry about how much you’re eating. Until your morning sickness goes away, eat as much as you need to in order to feel good. After that, eat when you’re hungry. Your body knows what you need. And give into a craving every now and then (I allowed myself one a week). It won’t hurt you, and you have a great excuse!
Here’s another website I found, and I thought of you:
