On our quest of stepping lightly, we have come to quite a few conclusions. We want less things, we want to make wise choices for our family and the Earth, and most importantly we just want to learn what works for us.
This week, we have started along a new journey. A journey in our kitchen without a microwave. I know – the horror of it!
We remembered that we still had a wedding present sitting in the upstairs of my parents house that had never been used and was still boxed. 6 years it’s been sitting there folks! Even though it wasn’t taking up space in our house, we needed to do something with it. Use it, sell it, donate it.. whatever it may be, but it needed a home before it no longer worked.
So as an experiment, we unplugged the toaster and the microwave and put them in the basement and plugged in the toaster oven in it’s place. I have ran across a few times when I could’ve used a microwave out of convenience – melting butter for a recipe, warming up leftovers, and heating up a mug of water for tea. I have found there are alternatives. As the oven was warming for the bread, I melted the butter in it. I warmed the leftovers on the stove top or in the oven, and I used the coffee pot to make hot water. Not such a big deal. I even used the toaster oven to make some killer meatball subs!
On the topic of microwaves, you may want to think about having them in your home. Microwaving can change the molecular structure of your food and microwaving can turn some food into carcinogens. But like I said, it’s a family decision and we still haven’t made up our minds yet. We’ll re-evaluate and discuss it come Monday.
Until next week, take a light step on the Earth this week. Just one. She’ll thank you.

I love your stepping lightly series!
Bec ~ I am so glad! Michele has a great series over on her blog on Thursdays too called Living Simply. She has been a great inspiration to me. http://www.frugalgranola.blogspot.com/
I love my toaster oven. When I got married 15 years ago my husband insisted we buy one, I had never used one before. I was hooked from the beginning! They are great!
