Herbal Nurturing: A Family Healing & Learning Guide GIVEAWAY

Are any of you unhappy with your doctors or pediatricians?  Do you think maybe you can take some control of your health and the health of your family by doing things a little more naturally?

Last year about this time, Val had an infected toe.  Now I’m not talking about a little cut that was a tad oozy.  I’m talking about her entire toe turning green!  We went the pediatrician, who happened to be out of town, and we had to deal with his fill-in.  She was not polite, she took a sample, told me the results would be in on Monday because of course it was a Friday, and even rudely asked me if I was going to breastfeed in front of her.  Okay, I’m getting off of my soap box.  She told me to just give Val some antibiotics and to be on our way.

Well, maybe she should have just told me this over the phone.  I could’ve guessed that’s what she would have done.  So we called our chiropractor – who we should have called first.  He told us about a homemade salve to fight infection, we made it, and within a few days it was HEALING!  Drastically!  Without antibiotics that would change the healthy flora of her gut.

These things work, and I wanted this book because I wanted to make a stash of goodies to keep on hand in case of scrapes and even when Mama just needs a soak.  In barely any time at all, I made three different soothers from Michele’s recipes to start my healing stash.

I bought some ingredients and containers from Rose Mountain Herbs and Tropical Traditions.

And this is what I made!

Sunday Inspiration

How can you wake up to a winter wonderland and not be inspired to do things like this?! Make a peppermint mocha.  Put on an extra layer and slippers.  Want a popping and crackling fire and a good book.  Clean your house (maybe organize, pack, and declutter too).  Make big, comforting meals.  Bake cookies.  Ahh blizzards aren’t all that bad! :)

This was a glimpse at my porch this morning, and it’s still snowing and blowing.

Inspiration from my week:

>>Decluttering and down-sizing is always inspiring as it creates space for other things.

>>I look forward to using this while I pack up my house and move.

>>This has been motivating and teaching me about blogging.

>>A positive vocabulary of mothering

>>Do you have an iPhone and need a little laugh?  Don’t miss this.

>>This TED Talk.

What’s been inspiring you this week?  Leave me a comment or share with The Organic Sister tomorrow on her blog! :)

Going through the big D…

and I don’t mean Dallas or divorce for that matter.

I mean decluttering, downsizing, and getting debt-free!

We made a big step in the right direction toward those goals today – even if it was a little bittersweet to let go of the ol’ gas guzzler.  We said good-bye to the RV today!

We traveled in The Angry Vegan last winter to Arizona and back a few times taking in the sights along the way.  We lived in it in Bisbee, we ran a race in Sedona, went to the Grand Canyon, visited friends here and there just to name a few things.  It sure has great memories to go with it!

I hope it serves it’s new family well, and it’ll be hitting the road south within a few short weeks with them.  :)

Welcome to my Home Wednesday ~ You Don’t Need A Job – You Need Guts!

  • ::So we realized we are human when we came down with the stomach bug.  Yuck!  I’ll spare all the details, of course but that’s why I’ve been so quiet.  I’m blogging now to the hum of my dishwasher and my washing machine.  It means we are on the mend!
  • ::An awesome E-book launched today!  Have you heard of it?  You Don’t Need A Job, You Need Guts! Buy it – Ash will rock your world!
  • ::By this time next week, we should have signed on a great house to rent.  I will wait until next week when everything is for sure before divulging anything.  I swear I jinx myself if I share too much too early. :)
  • ::We put up our Christmas tree and our decorations this week even among all the craziness.  How are you preparing your home for the holidays?

Sunday Inspiration

Today I am inspired to stay very close to home – it’s cold, we’ve been gone a lot, we all need down time and the house needs to be cleaned and packed.  I may leave for a tree, but that’s about all.  If you need me, you’ll know where to find me. ;)

We have started looking for houses, and it’s quickly coming back to me what a roller coaster ride finding a house can be.  We found a farmhouse with a barn and 36 acres that we fell in love with, and the owners took it off the market as we tried to see it.  Then I saw another house (yuck) and the owner of the homestead put theirs back on so I went to see it (omg beautiful).  We drove around and looked at rentals too to keep our options open.  Awaiting phone calls and talking locations on those also has me anxious about where we will be when we close on our house at the end of the month.

My Love List

{Photo Credit}

Beth shared her List of Love yesterday, and I am feeling inspired to do the same.  Sometimes we just need to fill up our hearts with gladness and share it with others so they may do the same.  She did that for me, and hopefully I can also do that for one of you. <3

::My Love List::

  1. Spending a morning with my sister, mom, niece, and nephew.  We had some inside jokes – “We didn’t do it, I swear!”  But most of all, I got to see my daughter connect with my niece on a totally new level.  They were holding hands, having toddler conversations together, and finishing each other’s sentences.  One would say, “Ho Ho Ho!”  The other would respond, “Merry Christmas!”  My heart is overflowing.
  2. Having a freezer full of food and some things stored for the winter.  Diced tomatoes and frozen corn from the garden.  Homemade ketchup and pickles.  Frozen venison that we just started processing ourself.
  3. Distance Reiki sessions are so fulfilling.  That connection and giving relaxation for only 15 minutes is so lovely.
  4. My husband who still loves me after all these years.  Even when my hair’s a mess, I’m wearing a robe, and reading storybook after storybook instead of making him breakfast on time. :P
  5. Good, homemade food.  There’s no description needed here.  It’s just food for the soul.
  6. A good cuppa coffee or tea is just as good for my soul.
  7. Spending time with friends talking about life, books, marriage, kids… I always need a refreshing morning like that.
  8. Fellow mamas and friends who support my parenting choices and getting sweet notes via Facebook about it.  Little reminders about how following your heart is so totally right.
  9. Getting things in the mail!  I can’t wait for Christmas cards to start flowing in. :)
  10. Christmas music, Christmas lights, Christmas decorations….. need I say more?

Easy Grain & Gluten Free Granola Bars

I have been learning more about gluten free, grain free, and processed sugar free baking lately.  V likes sharing treats with us, but I don’t like her having all that processed stuff.  I made some wonderful pumpkin cookies for Thanksgiving that I will share at another time, but I made this recipe last night and had interest in it right away.  I adapted a recipe from Joyful Abode for Easy Grain & Gluten Free Granola Bars.  You can see her recipe complete with pictures here!

My Easy Grain & Gluten Free Granola Bar Recipe:

  1. 2 1/2 cups assorted nuts and seeds (I used 1 1/2 cups almond, 1/2 cup sunflower, and 1/2 cup hemp seeds)
  2. 1 cup dried fruit (I used raisin)
  3. 2 cups shredded coconut
  4. 1/4 cup coconut oil
  5. 1/2 cup honey (I used raw)
  6. Splash of vanilla extract
  7. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  8. Generous sprinkle of cinnamon

Pulse to coursely chop the nuts and seeds in a food processor.  Add nuts, dried fruit, and dried coconut to a bowl and mix.

Add all other ingredients to a pan and mix over medium heat until it bubbles.  Pour over mixture and mix together.

Press the mixture into a pan lined with wax paper.  Make sure to press hard.  Cool for 2-3 hours in the fridge (or in the freezer if you are impatient like me).  Cut and serve.

**These are delicious.  I have heard mixing with peanut butter and cacao/cocoa is also a great treat this way!**

Welcome to my Home Wednesday ~ Update on the homestead

So remember my post from yesterday about a wonderful homestead for sale?  Well, they took it off the market when my agent contacted them.  I’m beyond bummed about it!

There must be another one awaiting us.

We are still dreaming.

Confessions at the end of NaBloPoMo

So this is the end of NaBloPoMo.  I didn’t blog everyday – I started late and I skipped a day (confession #1), but I sure had a great time processing through some things, sharing recipes and new things I’ve made, and selling some of my goodies under your watchful eyes.

Confession #2, when things really excite me I clam up and usually stop blogging.  I had to really fight with myself to start typing tonight because tomorrow we are viewing a house for sale in the local area.  Not just any house though – oh no! It’s a farmhouse, with a barn, and room for animals (by room I mean 36 beautiful acres in the country)!

I’m sharing because I want your well wishes, thoughts, prayers, Reiki, luck… whatever!  I’m already in love with the idea of this place.  I’ve been dreaming of a homestead for far too long.
