Making money online

There are a few things that I have learned to do online that actually *make* money.  A penny saved is a penny earned, right? :)

The first is CKY Books.  They actually buy books from you, you send them to them for free, and they paypal you for them.  I sent in 2 books last week, and I made $4.84.  I left it in my paypal account and I actually just bought a used cloth Motherease diaper with it.

The second thing I use is MyPoints.  They send me advertising emails, and if I click on them and view them I earn 5 points.  Sometimes I take surveys and make up to 50 points, and if I buy anything online I can buy through the MyPoints page and earn points per dollar.  I usually buy from Lakeside for Christmas and I get 500 points for spending $25.  Once you earn enough points, you can order a gift certificate.  I have gotten 2 certificates for $25 so far since I have been doing this – one for Steve & Barry’s and Motherhood Maternity.  If you want to sign up, leave me your email and we can both get 250 points!  That’s a good amount to start with and get you well on your way to a reward.

WFMW – Planning for Christmas

Did you know there are only 99 days left until Christmas?  Can you even believe it?  I have been very convicted this Christmas season to be wise about how we spend our Christmas budget.  Every month, we put a certain amount into our “vacation” fund which covers birthdays, trips, and Christmas and I’d really like this Christmas to be a good one.  A good one as in I find presents people like and want that are wise choices.  They may be homemade totes for my cousins with lipglosses and decorated notepads or onesies for the my new niece that have stamped, embroidered, or iron on letters on them made by me, or even using my discount through Mary Kay to get very nice and quality gift sets for the adults in my family.

So with all this thinking and planning, I have decided to take part in the 100 Days Until Christmas.

I will be using their calendars, creating my own lists, and putting together a binder of decorating and baking ideas just for Christmas – since I love it oh so much!! :D   Planning for Christmas works for me!

No Dryer?!

Before we left on vacation, the heating element in my dryer stopped working.  I guess all of my talk about hanging a clothesline in the basement and wanting to air dry clothes was taken a little too serious by the Universe and it showed me.  Haha!

And I have to admit, I have learned quite a bit by not having access to a heating machine!

  1. I enjoy laundry more when I hang it to dry.  I am more active in the process and it’s more relaxing then just throwing it into the next machine and waiting for the buzzer to go off.
  2. I have learned patience because now my clothes aren’t dry in 1 hour.. they aren’t even dry in one day at times since they are in the basement.  Planning outfits and being prepared ahead of time has definitely become a priority when it’s laundry time.
  3. Since I understand the process (the longer process of drying), I try not to throw clothes or blankets or towels into the wash until they really need it.  The less I have to wash and hang up, the easier it will be on me and the laundry won’t get too backed up.

We do plan on getting another dryer because with Sprout on the way, we will soon have a lot of clothes to wash/dry.  I have to admit though, I have really enjoyed my time of doing laundry without a dryer and I plan on hang drying once I do get that dryer too! :)

Free and Fun

As money has gotten tighter around here since our remodeling extravaganza and our vacation, I have been looking into FREE and fun activities.  Although we live in a small community, to my amazement there is quite a lot to do around here!

Our local community college was holding community forums yesterday and we got to listen to 2 great lectures and have a free lunch afterwards.  A huge free lunch may I add – grilled hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings, chips, pop.  We were entertained for 3 hours and had full bellies until past our normal dinner time.

There are more events like that listed every week for the next 2 months.  They include lectures on envrionmental issues, religion, and there are musical and art shows coming up as well.  I am sure we will be attending more things like that in the near future.

Our local YMCA is also having a 2 week open house to the public, so I went there today for a FREE hour yoga class.  I plan on using it a few more times before they go back to closed membership because I really like the community aspect, and I really do enjoy their classes.  It’s even more fun when it’s FREE.

There are also outdoor concerts in the park for FREE in my town until the end of the month.  They range from jazz to classical and from country to rock.  If it’s not too cold, we may just go watch a couple before the season is soon over for that kind of thing.

By looking in the newspaper, I found a local historical day that is taking place about 5 miles from us.  They have a parade, 5K run/walk, and entertainment.  Most of which is FREE.  Packing a picnic and leaving for wallet at home would probably help to keep it that way. :)

How do you have fun in a way that’s free?

Frugal Friday

My husband and I have decided to go napkin and paper towel free in the kitchen as one of our approaches to going green.  He broke out the sewing machine to make his own backpack last week, so I finally got the motivation to go to St. Vincent DePaul’s for the items I needed.  I bought a twin flat sheet that was light colored with pretty yellow and pink flowers (it matches my kitchen yellow), and that will become the napkins.  I have 10 cut and pinned but I need to buy a new sewing needle before I finish.

As for the paper towel, I will be cutting up a few old shirts that we never wear anymore and putting them in a drawer.  They will be our rags that will replace our paper towel.  Both of these will be easy to convert to – wash them, put them away, use them, put in hamper, repeat. :)

I also bought a picnic table cloth (the vinyl kind), so I could make reusable sandwich bags.  I got the idea from Michele, who shared this tutorial a few weeks ago.  These are also cut and pinned waiting for the sewing machine to be functional.

Not only do I feel I am being frugal, but I’m also making less waste.  That’s a good thing!

How to use up leftovers

As my DH and I were going through the fridge one day, we realized something about leftovers.  There were a lot in the fridge and a lot that I had gone bad.  It’s not that we don’t like the food that we had made and packed up to put away, usually we just forget it’s in there.

In order to use up our leftovers, if there a small amount (just enough for a snack) I pack it up and leave it out.  DH stays up late into the night working on the computer and our business and usually snacks.  Usually on something that’s not the most healthy – but now when I leave some leftovers out he’ll have those for his late night snack instead.

I’ve also been keeping better tabs on what is leftover in the fridge.  The other day we used up some leftover spaghetti sauce for lunch over rotini pasta.  We served it with cheese on top and some garlic toast.

When we put a little bit more thought into leftovers, they started disappearing! :)

Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap

Six weeks ago, I made a big decision about my hair.  After years of struggling with curly and frizzy long locks – fighting with it to be perfectly curled or unnaturally straight – I made a change.

I got dreadlocks!  Now I am not saying everyday I love my hair now because it is still an ongoing struggle, but it’s a struggle that I needed.  A struggle with patience.  A struggle understanding that my hair doesn’t have to be the societal norm or perfection for me to be pretty or have confidence in myself.  A struggle to leave my hair do its thing because that is what it does best.

In this effort, I have really began to save money on hair products and accessories.  I used to use (pretty much daily): shampoo, conditioner, bodywash or soap, gel/mouse, comb and brush.  I have cut down my washing to about every 3 days, and I now use one bar of soap for my entire body.  I use Dr. Bronner’s Castile Peppermint Soap Bar for shampooing my hair, washing my face, and washing my body.  I believe a $2.99 bar will last my husband and I at least one month.  Not only is it frugal, but it sure does smell good too. :)

7 Cheap Date Ideas

  1. Movies at home. One thing we really love around here is movies, so we get Netflix. We pay $14/month to get movies delivered to our door. Usually we choose them together, and then when we have a spare night and want to stay in (or are short on cash) – we pop in a movie that we have. We really enjoy always having this option for a cheap and easy date night. If you like popcorn with your movies, you should read these frugal and tasty popcorn recipes.
  2. Play board games! It’s so nice to put on some quiet music to sit around the table and play. Our favorites are Chrononauts, Poker, and Settlers of Catan.
  3. Go to a park. We like taking our dogs to the park or by the marina and we just walk around and talk. It’s nice to go for a stroll together and hold hands once in awhile.
  4. Make dinner together. Turn on some music, pull out your recipes, and help each other cook. While you eat – put out some candles. :)
  5. Go stargazing or watch the sunset or the sunrise together. DH picked me up one morning before school (yes – high school) and took me to see the sunrise. It was amazing!
  6. Go for a day hike and pack a picnic. We’ve even done this in the middle of winter.
  7. Visit your local museum, visitor center or other local interests. Bring your camera and take pictures along the way.

Milk Powder

My DH bought some powered milk (or moo pow as we call it around here) to take along on a backpacking trip.  He hadn’t used any of it, so we had it already bagged up for 2 quarts.  I thought, “Since it’s just sitting in my pantry, and it’s all measured to fit my jug anyway I might as well make it.”

I made it and put it in the pitcher in the fridge, and we drank about 3 pitchers of it before my DH wanted some *real* milk.  I guess oreos and moo pow just wouldn’t cut it. :)   I have to admit though that I couldn’t taste the difference between how I made it and the skim milk that I buy in the store.  I am not the type of girl to sit and drink a plain glass of milk either, but I did it with the powdered milk and toast one morning and it was good!

My box of powered milk was 4 pounds and would make about 5 gallons of milk.  I paid $7 for it!  There is no way I could find 5 gallons of milk in the store for $7.  Heck, I had previously paid $5.99 for an organic gallon.  So if you need to cut corners for awhile, this is a frugal way to get more milk for less money.

Iced Coffee Recipe

If you haven’t noticed by now, my DH and I have a slight addiction to iced coffees.  He refuses to eat (or drink anything for that matter) at McDonalds, so he has not tried their awesome Vanilla Iced Coffee.  He does indeed love Burger King’s Mocha Joe though.   In order for me to save money on the $2 per cup of iced coffee at BK, I have been searching for iced coffee recipes that are easy and yummy at home.  My Faux Mocha Joe Recipe was a hit, but I am always looking for something new.

I came across this recipe, and it’s just another thing that helps me save money on expensive iced coffees at the fast food joints.

  • Brew 10-12 cups of your favorite coffee and let it cool
  • As it’s cooling make (or just use a store bought can of sweetened condensed milk)
    • On the stove, bring to a boil 1/2-cup of water, 1-cup of sugar and 3-tablespoons of margarine or shortening.  Add a dash of salt.  Stir the mixture every now and then.  When it comes to a full rolling boil, remove it from the heat.  Allow it to cool slightly.  Add a cup of instant dry milk powder.  Use a whisk to stir it smooth.  A fork or a spoon will not work out all the lumps.  You really need a whisk, or egg beaters.   Courtesy of Hillbilly Housewife
  • Put the cooled coffee and sweetened condensed milk into a pitcher for the fridge and cool completely.
  • Serve in a glass with ice and a straw and enjoy!  It’s so much cheaper than McDonalds or Burger King. :)
